This all happens in the same week that Bloomberg reports staff are increasingly frustrated at Roblox’s failure to address woeful diversity within the company, with incredibly few women in senior positions. According to PCG and Troy Hunt, many received “a sorry email,” while others were offered “a year of identity protection.” Which, you know, doesn’t seem quite enough. We’ve contacted Roblox to ask why such data was being stored in this way and for more details on how it intends to support those affected.
Given the lack of information on the investigation, its pledge to “continue to be vigilant” doesn’t currently hold an enormous amount of promise. But it’s fine because the company “engaged independent experts to support the investigation led by our information security team” and added that it will “continue to be vigilant in monitoring and vetting the cyber security posture of Roblox and our third-party vendors.” The company also said it contacted those affected to “communicate the next steps we are taking to support them.”
In a statement given to PC Gamer, a Roblox representative acknowledged the “third-party security issue,” describing the leak as “unauthorized access to limited personal information of a subset of our creator community.” These are astoundingly diminishing terms for what is clearly incredibly detailed information about 3,943 individuals. When another user doubted the veracity of u/BukPlayzlol’s claim, the latter responded by sending a YouTube video by a Filipino Roblox streamer exploring PH Hangout 22o with the title, “ May nahuli akong nagkakantutan” (I caught someone fucking).According to Have I Been Pwned, the leak was posted in “niche communities” in 2021, but despite this, Roblox did not let anyone know it had happened, least of all those affected. While explicit games violate Roblox’s policy, the user pointed out that the platform’s administrators can take time when acting on reports. “Some players in there are even asking if they can hookup irl (in real life),” they added. “How did I know? I saw the game’s chat in the game in which one of the players revealed their age which was 10, I also saw ages 9, 11, and 12,” they shared, adding that he also saw the N-word and “Nazis” being used in conversation. The user also said that most of the players in the game were likely children. When I went inside the house, I saw two players having sex inside there,” they shared. “When I joined the first game, there was the PBB House, SOGO, and a Mang Inasal. “You can remove your clothes and do sexual acts,” the user shared, adding that they found popular Filipino landmarks inside the game such as the Pinoy Big Brother House, the motel chain SOGO, and grilled chicken joint Mang Inasal.
